Feodor Yakovlevich Fortinski ( Russian Феодор Яковлевич Фортинский , Ukrainian Федір Якович Фортинський Fedir Jakowytsch Fortynskyj * February 15 jul. / 27. February  1846 greg. In Schostje , Ryazan Governorate , Russian Empire ; † December 12 jul. / 25. December  1902 greg. in Kiev , Russian Empire) was a Russian historian , Medievalist , professor and rector at St. Vladimir University in Kiev.

Life

Feodor Fortinski was born into the family of a village priest in the village of Shostje ( Шостье ) in Ujesd Kassimow in the Russian governorate of Ryazan and attended the theological school in Ryazan . Between 1865 and 1869 he studied at the Faculty of History and Philology at the University of Saint Petersburg .

In May 1872 he received his diploma and then became an assistant professor of general history at the Kiev St. Vladimir University. In March 1877 Fortinski became a doctor of general history, in April of the same year an associate professor and in 1878 a full professor. From 1887 to 1890 he was dean of the Faculty of History and Philology at Kiev University. In August 1890 he became, in succession to Nikolai Rennenkampff , rector of the St. Vladimir University and remained so until July 1902. In 1895 he was made an honorary member of the Historical Nestor Society and in 1902 he became an honorary member of the Kiev Theological Seminary. Fortinski died at the age of 56 in Kiev and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .
