Oleksandr Prokopowytsch Markewytsch ( Ukrainian , born March 6 . Jul / 19th March  1905 greg. In Ploské , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 23. April 1999 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian- Soviet zoologist .

Life

Oleksandr Markewytsch was born as the fifth child of a large religious family in the village of Ploske in what is now the Ukrainian Tarashcha Rajon , where he was raised to work from childhood. To compensate for this, he read a lot, so that he could educate himself and study at the pedagogical college in Bila Zerkwa between 1921 and 1925 . He then worked as a teacher and from 1926, after successfully passing the exam, he studied at the biological faculty of the Higher Institute of Education (now Kiev University ). After successfully completing his studies in 1930, he went to the Faculty of Parasitology of the Institute of Ichthyology in Leningrad as a doctoral student and worked in the best laboratory in the country for parasitology under the direction of the zoologist Valentin Alexandrovich Dogel ( Валентин Александрович Догель ), 1882-1955. On November 16, 1931 he defended his dissertation and from 1931 he taught on "fish diseases" at the Leningrad fish and industry colleague. In 1933 he became an assistant professor at the Leningrad Institute of Chemical and Technological Food Industry and from 1934 he worked there as a professor of biology, so that in 1935, based on the entirety of his scientific work, he received a doctorate in biological sciences from the Scientific Council of the Leningrad State University received.

In the spring of 1935 Oleksandr Markewytsch returned to Kiev at the invitation of Professor Schmalhausen and became professor and head of the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR . He held this position until 1960. During the "Great Patriotic War" he was evacuated to Ufa with the institute and after the war he was head of the Department of Parasitology and Invasive Diseases at the Kiev Veterinary Institute of the University of Kiev from 1945 to 1950 (today the Veterinary Faculty of the National Agricultural University ). In 1957 he became an academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

Markevytsch died at the age of 94 in Kiev and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .

Oleksandr Markewytsch wrote more than 700 scientific publications, including 25 books on the study of phenomena of parasitology and diseases of fish and invertebrates.
