history

The Gehrdener Berg developed into a popular excursion destination at the end of the 19th century, especially for the residents of the nearby city of Hanover . In 1898 the Berggasthaus Niedersachsen , built by Emil-Werner Baule on behalf of the Hannoversche Straßenbahn AG , was completed. The excursion restaurant was embedded in a 14 hectare park in the style of an English landscape garden with a 2.5 hectare baroque garden . It was laid out by the Hanoverian horticultural director Julius Trip on behalf of the Hannoversche Straßenbahn AG in 1898. The park, which still exists today, is a listed building, like the remaining buildings .

The Berggasthaus Niedersachsen could be reached by tram from Hanover. The Hannoversche streetcar AG had the connection to Gehrden late 19th century with the line 10 to an overland route expanded. A branch line led from the depot in Gehrden to the excursion restaurant on Gehrdener Berg. It was shut down in 1917 because the overhead line was needed for war purposes.

From the completion in 1898 to the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, the excursion restaurant was operated without interruption. It was one of the most attractive excursion destinations in the Hanover area, like the Benther Berg-Terrassen on Benther Berg . From 1939 it was used as a military hospital, alternative hospital and children's home. In 1949 it was renovated and reopened as a restaurant. The main building was demolished in 1959 due to water damage.
