Afanasy Ivanovich Bulgakov ( Russian Афанасий Иванович Булгаков ; born April 17, jul. / 29. April  1859 greg. In Baititschi , Ujesd Bryansk , Oryol Governorate , Russian Empire ; † April 14 jul. / 27. April  1907 greg. In Kiev , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire) was a Russian Orthodox theologian, church historian, and father of the Soviet writer Mikhail Bulgakov .

Life

Afanassi Ivanovich Bulgakov studied from 1876 to 1881 in Orel and then at the Kiev Theological Academy . Between 1885 and 1887 he taught the Greek language in Novocherkassk . In 1886 he received a diploma in theology and was assistant professor of ancient history. In 1896 Bulgakov was appointed State Councilor.

From 1889 he was director and from March 1902 associate professor of the Faculty of History and Western Religions of the Kiev Theological Academy . On December 11, 1906, he received a doctorate in theology and on February 8, 1907, he was promoted to the rank of full professor. Most of his studies were devoted to the history of Western Christianity, and particularly Catholicism .

Bulgakov had been married to Varvara Michajlowna (nee Pokrovskaya) since 1890 and had seven children with her, including their first-born son Mikhail Bulgakov , who became famous as a writer. Afanassi Bulgakov died two days before he would turn 48 in Kiev and was buried in the Baikowe Cemetery.
