Ivan Petrowytsch Kawaleridse ( Ukrainian Іван Петрович Кавалерідзе , Russian Иван Петрович Кавалеридзе Ivan Petrovich Kawaleridse * April 1 . Jul / 13. April  1887 greg. In the hamlet Ladanski , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 3. December 1978 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian - Soviet sculptor , filmmaker , film director , playwright, and screenwriter .

Life

Ivan Kawaleridze was born in Ladansky ( Ладанский ), today's Novopetrivka ( Новопетрівка ) in Romny district of the Ukrainian Sumy Oblast . After attending primary school in today's Stara Talalajiwka and three years of teaching at a district school, his uncle, an artist and archaeologist at the Scythian Department of the Kiev Archaeological Museum, brought him to Kiev in 1899. From 1907 to 1909 he studied at the Kiev Art School and from 1909 to 1910 he was an art student at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg . In 1910/1911 he was at Naum Aronson's private studio in Paris to perfect his artistic skills .

He began his film activities in 1911. Between 1928 and 1933 he worked as an artist, writer and director in the Odessa film studios and between 1934 and 1941 in Kiev. From 1957 to 1962 he was a director at the Dovschenko film studio in Kiev .

After the October Revolution , he was actively involved in the implementation of Lenin's plan of monumental propaganda and created numerous monuments in what is now Ukraine.

Kawaleridze died at the age of 91 in Kiev and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .
