The Monument to Yaroslav the Wise ( Ukrainian Пам'ятник Ярославу Мудрому ) is a bronze sculpture of the Grand Duke of Kiev, Yaroslav the Wise, unveiled in 1997 in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev .

Location

The monument is located in the immediate vicinity of the Golden Gate , commissioned by Yaroslav the Wise, at the entrance to the Soloti worota metro station on Wolodymyrska Street in the center of Kiev.

The 4.1 m high monument of the Grand Duke holds a model of the original St. Sophia Cathedral , which he had built, in his hands and stands on a 0.6 m high granite base, to which a staircase leads. The monument, inaugurated at the end of May 1997, was erected by Mykola Kyslyj ( Микола Кислий ) based on a sketch found in the workshop of the Ukrainian artist Ivan Kawaleridze ( Іван Кавалерідзе ), who had died at the time .

The monument has been popularly nicknamed "The Man with the Cake". A smaller copy of the monument is on the Andreassteig in front of the Ivan Kawaleridze Museum.
