Mychajlo Uljanowytsch Bilyj (born November 12, 1922 in Moskali ( Москалі ), Chernigov Governorate , Ukrainian SSR ; † August 5, 2001 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian- Soviet politician, physicist and rector of the Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev .

Life

Mykhaylo Bilyj participated as a soldier in the Red Army at the Second World War, in part, then studied physics at the Taras Shevchenko University, 1964 Doctor of Physics and Mathematics and a year later a professor. As a specialist in experimental physics, optics and spectroscopy, in particular the luminescence of inorganic substances, he headed the department for experimental physics, solid state optics and optics from 1963 to 1993, from 1962 to 1970 he was dean of the physics faculty and from December 1970 to December 1985 rector of the Taras- Shevchenko University in Kiev. From 1969 onwards, Bilyj was a corresponding member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences . He has published more than 350 scientific papers.

Bilyj was also active as a politician and as such was a member of the Central Committee of the KPU , a member of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR and its chairman between 1972 and 1980 . Mychajlo Bilyj died in Kiev and was buried in the local Baikowe cemetery .
