Ivan Vasylowytsch Mykolaitschuk (born June 15, 1941 in Chortoryja , Chernivtsi Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ; † August 3, 1987 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR) was a Ukrainian film actor , director and screenwriter .

Life

In 1957 Mykolaitschuk studied theater studies at the Chernivtsi Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater and from 1963 to 1965 he attended the Institute for Theater Arts in Kiev. General recognition gained Mykolaitschuk with the role of the young Shevchenko in the film Dream ( Сон ) of 1964 and the Ivan Palijtschuk in the film of the Soviet director Sergei Parajanov Fire Horse ( предків Тіні забутих , literally Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors ). The film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors won 39 international awards and 28 awards at film festivals, including 24 Grand Prix. In total, he played 34 film roles as an actor, wrote 9 screenplays and directed two films, including the film Babylon XX ( Вавилон XX ). He died in Kiev in 1987 at the age of 47 and was buried there in the Baikowe Cemetery .

Honors

In 1988 Iwan Mykolaitschuk was posthumously awarded the National Prize of Ukraine with the Taras Shevchenko Prize . In 2016, the Ukrainian National Bank issued a two hryvnia commemorative coin with his likeness to commemorate him .
