Yevhen Lazarenko Kostjantynowytsch ( Ukrainian Євген Костянтинович Лазаренко * October 13 . Jul / 26. October  1912 greg. In Kharkov , Kharkov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 1. January 1979 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian - Soviet geologist, mineralogist and University Rector of Lviv University .

Life

Yevhen Lasarenko studied at the Geological-Geographic Faculty of the University of Kharkiv until 1934 and then at its graduate school until 1937 . Between 1938 and 1944 he worked in various geological institutions in the Soviet Union and was assistant professor at the Voronezh Scientific University . After the liberation of the Ukraine, he moved to the University of Lviv in 1944 , where he initially worked as an assistant professor and later as dean of the geological faculty. After becoming a doctor of geology and mineralogy in 1947, he became a professor in 1948 and finally rector of Lviv University from 1951 to 1963. In 1951 he became a corresponding member and in 1969 an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . From 1969 to 1971 he was director of the Institute of Geological Sciences of the USSR and from 1972 he was director of the Institute of Geochemistry and Physics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

In the 1960s he discovered the layered silicate Tarasovite, later named after the Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko , in the Donets Basin .

Lasarenko died at the age of 66 in Kiev and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .
