Thomas Gergen

Thomas Gergen (born January 10, 1971 in Saarlouis ) is a German law scholar and professor as well as head of the intellectual property and intangible assets at the European University for Economics & Management and at the ISEC HdW University of Economics in Luxembourg.

Education

Gergen studied German and French law as well as Romance studies and history in Saarbrücken , Poitiers , Barcelona, Salamanca , Lisbon and Durham . In Saarbrücken he was awarded a Dr. phil. (Spanish Philology, Romance Linguistics, History) and Dr. iur. PhD. There he completed his habilitation with a paper on the practice of reprinting privileges in Württemberg in the 19th century and received the Venia Legendi for the subjects of German and European legal history, civil law, copyright law, comparative law and church law.

Teaching

From the summer semester 2002 to the winter semester 2006/07 Gergen was a research assistant at the chair for German legal history and civil law of Elmar Wadle at the Saarland University. From autumn 2006 he was a deputy professor at the Leibniz University of Hanover (chair for civil law, international private law, comparative law and legal professional practice). In the summer semester of 2008 he represented Peter Oestmann (Institute for Legal History - German and Canonical Department) at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster .

professorship

2010 joined Gergen, a professor of civil law, legal history, private international law and comparative law, and copyright law at the University of Saarland that he has since been a lecturer at the Distance and Independent Studies Center (DISC) of the University of Kaiserslautern for the master distance learning "Business Law for Business Practice" and works as a legal expert for courts, notaries' offices and commercial enterprises with a focus on foreign private law.

In 2013 he was appointed professor at the European University for Economics & Management (eufom) in Luxembourg for international and comparative civil and commercial law with intellectual property law. Since 2014 Gergen has been head of the research focus for intangible assets and intellectual property at the European University for Economics & Management in Luxembourg and later at the private, state-recognized ISEC HdW Hochschule der Wirtschaft. In 2017, eufom was taken over by ISEC.

Membership in professional associations and research institutions

Thomas Gergen is a member of the Association of Civil Law Teachers , the Association for Constitutional History and the German Association of Romanists . He is also an employee of the DFG Intellectual Property Research Center in Saarbrücken and a scientific advisory board member of the legal history journal Journal on European History of Law . He is admitted to the Saarbrücken Regional Court as a legal advisor for French law.

Thomas Gergen is a member of the EIKV (European Institute for Knowledge & Value Management ) in Luxembourg.

Prof. Gergen is an author and advisory board member for magazines such as the magazine for inheritance and tax law practice (Zerb), the archive for copyright and media law (UFITA) and media and law. He also works on the Munich Commentary on the Civil Code.
