Jan Pieter Cardinal Schotte CICM (born April 29, 1928 in Beveren-Leie , Belgium , † January 10, 2005 in Rome ) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . He was General Secretary of the Synod of Bishops and President of the Labor Office of the Apostolic See .

Life

Jan Pieter Schotte came in 1946 with the Scheutvelder missionaries (CICM) and received on August 3, 1952 in Brussels , the ordination . After studying canon law , he was Subregens, Regens and professor at various seminaries in Belgium and the United States (1953–1966).

In 1967 he came to Rome after his appointment as general secretary of his order . During this time he dealt with social and international issues and held leadership positions in several organizations and commissions. At the same time he was active in the service of the Holy See .

December 20, 1983 he was appointed Titular Bishop of Silli appointed and received on January 6 in 1984 by Pope John Paul II. The episcopal ordination . On April 24, 1985 he was appointed General Secretary of the Synod of Bishops and made archbishop . At the establishment of the Labor Office of the Holy See (ULSA) on April 14, 1989, he was named its President. In the consistory of November 26, 1994 he was created by Pope John Paul II as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry of San Giuliano dei Fiamminghi .

He was General Secretary of the Synod of Bishops until February 1, 2004. In this office he was responsible for the organization of the Continental Synods for Europe (1991 and 1999), Africa (1994), Lebanon (1995), America (1997), Asia (1998) and Oceania (1998). He accompanied the Pope on his travels to numerous countries and was a member of delegations of the Holy See on various international occasions. He was also a member of various congregations of the Roman Curia (for the bishops, for the evangelization of the peoples and for the processes of beatification and canonization) and various papal commissions (for Latin America , the Vatican State , the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature, the administration of the goods of the Apostolic See).

Jan Schotte died on January 10, 2005 in the Gemelli Clinic in Rome. He was buried in his titular church, San Giuliano dei Fiamminghi .
