Margherita Carosio

Margherita Carosio (born June 8, 1908 in Genoa ; † January 10, 2005 there ) was an Italian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Carosio received singing lessons from her father, the composer Natale Carosio. She performed in a concert hall for the first time at the age of 14. She then performed as Lucia di Lammermoor on the opera stage at the Municipal Theater in Novi Ligure.

Carosio had her greatest successes in the 1930s and 1940s. She was one of the leading sopranos in Italy in the pre- Maria Callas era . From 1929 to 1955 Carosio could be found regularly at La Scala in Milan . She also had engagements at the opera houses of Antwerp , Nice , Monte Carlo , Buenos Aires , the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona , the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London and at the State Operas of Vienna and Berlin .

Towards the end of her career, Carosio switched to the lyric department and was particularly successful as Violetta in Giuseppe Verdi's La traviata . In addition to her opera engagements, she also made three films. After she retired, she continued to work as a music journalist and music critic in Genoa. She died there on January 10, 2005.
