Friedrich Wilhelm Putzger (born January 10, 1849 in Siebenlehn ; † August 3, 1913 in Plauen ) was a German educator , Saxon school inspector, textbook author and author of the first edition of the historical atlas, which is still sold under his name today.

Life

Friedrich Wilhelm Putzger was born the son of a tanner and mayor and attended elementary school in his native town. After graduation, he moved to the Royal Saxon Teachers' College in neighboring Nossen in 1863 . From 1869 he was an assistant teacher in what is now the Freital district of Deuben . During the Franco-German War he served as a soldier in the Dresden garrison. In 1871 he was appointed elementary school teacher in Deuben. Because of his good second exam, he was admitted to the University of Leipzig . In the Kingdom of Saxony , this was possible for elementary school teachers without a high school diploma since 1865.

In 1872 Putzger enrolled at the University of Leipzig and two years later passed the candidate examination for higher education (cand. Paed.). In 1875 he was appointed senior teacher at the secondary school in Rochlitz . A dissertation submitted in 1877 was rejected by the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Leipzig because it was too small. In 1877 Putzger married, from which two sons and a daughter emerged.

In 1878 he took up the post of director of the community school in Rochlitz. In 1884 Putzger founded an elementary school library in Rochlitz, from which today's city library emerged . In 1885 he also took over the management of the Rochlitz Business School . Putzger was involved in several social associations. His study of population history, presented in a second doctoral attempt in 1891, was judged to be methodologically inadequate, but was finally accepted by Friedrich Ratzel in 1892 . Interestingly enough, Putzger threatened to fail in the historical rigorosum with Karl Lamprecht , which led to the overall grade “rite”.

In 1892 Putzger switched to school supervision and became the Royal Saxon District School Inspector (District School Council) in Auerbach . He was thus responsible for full-time supervision of all primary schools in the Auerbach administration . In 1894 he took on the same function in the Borna district school inspection . In 1900 he finally moved to Plauen as a district school inspector . In 1899 he was awarded the title of school councilor, in 1912 he received the title of high school councilor.

Putzger died on August 3, 1913, shortly before his retirement at the age of 64.

The historical school atlas

Putzger from 1924, Swiss edition

As early as 1876, Putzger was commissioned to work on the new edition of the physical-statistical atlas of the German Empire published by the geographers Richard Andree and Oskar Peschel in the Velhagen & Klasing publishing house . In 1877 he unsuccessfully submitted his contribution as a dissertation to the University of Leipzig. In 1876 he was commissioned by the publisher to compile a history atlas for school use. It was first published in April 1877 as a historical school atlas and comprised 27 main and 48 secondary maps. The atlas became a great commercial success, which was also based on the comparatively low price of 1.50 marks. The work was particularly popular in secondary schools and high schools. However, in the same year, the publisher tried to find more competent editors, as Putzger's knowledge of ancient history was insufficient.

From the end of 1880 the contact between Putzger and the publisher seems to be broken, since the 14th edition in 1888 Alfred Baldamus has been named as the editor . The atlas continued to bear Putzger's name. In 1889, Putzger published a thin historical atlas for use in elementary schools at Velhagen & Klasing. In the contract that had been concluded between the publisher and the author, Putzger left his name to the publisher for a fee for use in connection with the high school atlas and renounced any involvement in this work.

Putzger's merit lies in the application of the principles of reduction and clear structuring to the historical material, which, however, he himself only mastered poorly. The historical school atlas was only made possible by his enthusiasm for work and his willingness to perform . In addition to his historical atlases, Putzger also published curriculum proposals and reading books .
