Ernie George Wasson (also Ernie G. Wasson ; born January 10, 1950 in Berkeley , California ) is an American botanist and horticultural scientist .

Life

Ernie Wasson attended from 1964 to 1968 in the nearby at Berkeley City El Cerrito the El Cerrito High School and then studied from 1968 to 1974 at the Humboldt State University in Arcata , California, where he in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Geography graduated. From 1978 to 1981 he was co-owner of the nursery Northwoods Nursery in Arcata. He also taught at the College of the Redwoods from 1979 to 1981 and later at the Green Animals Topiary Gardens in Rhode Island . From 1982 to 1984 Wasson completed the Longwood Graduate Program in Ornamental Horticulture and Public Garden Management at the University of Delaware in Newark and graduated with a Master of Science degree .

As part of his university education, Wasson dealt with conveying scientific information about plant breeding , plant selection and horticulture measures to protect plants from harmful effects in public areas (public horticulture) . He completed his master's degree as part of the Longwood Graduate Program , whose interdisciplinary approach is based on the traditional preparatory work of Longwood Gardens . After completing his studies, Wasson initially worked in the private sector again. From 1985 to 1990 he was director of the Green Animals Topiary Gardens in Portsmouth, Rhode Island , and from 1991 to 1998 he worked for the Berkeley Horticultural Nursery in his hometown Berkeley. From 1997 to 2000 Wasson wrote the Internet column All Plants Considered .

From 1998 to 2013 Wasson headed the plant breeding division and the botanical teaching garden at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California . There he looked after one of the most species-rich sage gardens in the world. In addition, the garden includes in particular an extensive collection of Californian vegetation and worldwide vegetation of the Mediterranean climate. During Wasson's tenure, the three cultivars Salvia 'Katheena' (1998), Salvia 'Cabrillo Sunrise' (1999) and Salvia 'Cabrillo Sunset' (2001) were bred there. In 2013 Wasson retired. The Garden Club of the Faculty of Horticulture donated an annual award for an outstanding student named after Wasson on his departure.

Wasson is a member of the California Native Plant Society (CNPS) and the Western Horticultural Society , where he is also a speaker.

Works

Wasson was one of six consultants involved in the English-language original edition of the horticultural work Botanica, The Illustrated AZ of over 10,000 Garden Plants and How to Cultivate Them , published by Gordon Cheers and published in 1997 at Random House in Australia , where he was primarily responsible for the areas of horticulture and plant design, South African plants, ornamental grasses and sage species. Wasson was also joint editor-in-chief with Richard G. Turner Jr. for the English-language licensed edition for the United States, which was published in the same year by New York publisher Barnes & Noble . The book is now considered a standard work ; it appeared in several, partly revised editions and licensed editions and has been translated into several languages. The German-language edition first appeared in 1998 under the title Botanica: Das ABC der Pflanzen. 10,000 types in text and images in the Koenemann Verlagsgesellschaft in Cologne.

Illustrated, over 8,500 plants from A – Z , Wasson was responsible as co-editor and senior consultant. The book was also published in several editions and licensed editions, including the changed title The complete encyclopedia of trees and shrubs.
