Frederick H. Blair
Frederick Harold Blair (born January 10, 1874 in Chatham / New Brunswick , † September 3, 1939 in the Hebrides ) was a Canadian organist, choir conductor, pianist and music teacher.
Blair took organ and piano lessons in his youth with AWS Smythe in his hometown and with Thomas Morley in Saint-John. From 1897 he studied with Walter Parratt at the Royal College of Music . On his return he was organist in Moncton and Fredericton and from 1900 organist and choirmaster at the Church of St Andrew and St Paul in Montreal.
From 1904 to 1913 Blair taught piano, organ and piano accompaniment at the McGill University Conservatory . From 1913 he was director of the Canadian Academy of Music in Montreal. Here the composer Barbara Pentland was one of his students. In 1908 he was brief conductor of the Montreal Oratorio Society . As a piano accompanist he worked a. a. with Edmund Burke and Lucien Martin .
Blair was killed in 1939 when the passenger ship Athenia was torpedoed by the German submarine U 30 near the Hebrides.
