Walter Albert Heckmann (born January 10, 1929 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † June 26, 1994 in Aalst near Brussels ) was a German painter, graphic artist, draftsman and sculptor.

Life

He spent his childhood alternately at Weinheim an der Bergstrasse and in Freiburg. Walter Heckmann began to paint as a teenager, after completing school from 1948–1950 he completed a technical drafting apprenticeship and studied lithography and graphic techniques at the Freiburg Foreigners Academy. From 1950 to 1952 he studied painting at the Munich Academy under Franz Xaver Fuhr. 1953/1954 half-year stays in Paris and Rome. Study trips to Holland, Belgium, Austria and Scandinavia. In 1958 he settled as a freelance sculptor in Freiburg i.Br. low. 1959 Marriage to Ursula Minnet (April 29, 1939 - January 15, 2016). Birth of the son Philipp Heckmann. In the years from 1953 to 1971 Walter Heckmann was mainly active as a sculptor, from 1968 onwards he increasingly created panel paintings, initially still related to sculpture. 1971 move to Frankfurt am Main. At the same time he finished his sculptural work and from now on devoted himself exclusively to painting. 1973 Relocation to Meudt in the Westerwald. 1978 to 1980 apartment and studio in St Paul de Vence, southern France. In 1980 he returned to Germany, first to Düsseldorf and later to Frankfurt am Main, where he opened the “Galerie an der Schirn” in 1987 and exhibited his paintings until his death on June 26, 1994.

Critics tried to classify Walter Heckmann as a representative of the “New German Landscape” or “Poetic Realism”. But this is difficult, Walter Heckmann was a very versatile artist with many facets. Classifications only apply to some jobs or periods of life and cannot be universally valid.
