Vincenzo Ferroni

Vincenzo Ferroni (born February 17, 1858 in Tramutola , † January 10, 1934 in Milan ) was an Italian composer and music teacher.

Live and act

Nothing is known about Ferroni's musical training in his youth. From 1870 he studied at the Paris Conservatory with Augustin Savard and from 1878 composition with Jules Massenet . In 1883 he finished his studies with a first prize in fugue. In 1885 he won an international composition competition advertised by Le Figaro magazine with the hymne d'un pâtre italien for piano .

After teaching harmony as an assistant at the Paris Conservatory between 1876 and 1883, Ferroni received the chair of composition at the Conservatory in Milan, which had been vacant since Amilcare Ponchielli's death in 1888 , and held it until his retirement in 1929. He was also vice director for 24 years and director of the conservatory for a few months. His students included u. a. Riccardo Pick-Mangiagalli , Italo Montemezzi , Gianandrea Gavazzeni , Ettore Pozzoli , Virgilio Mortari , Ettore Panizza , Guido Farina and Felice Lattuada .

In a competition at Casa Sonzogno in 1890, he took third place with his opera Rudello after Pietro Mascagni with Cavalleria rusticana and Nicola Spinelli with Labilia . With the opera Ettore Fieramosca based on his own libretto, he had success at the Teatro Sociale di Como in 1896 . Il Carbonaro was played at the Teatro Lirico di Milano in 1900 , several other stage works by Ferroni were not performed. Ferroni also composed orchestral works, including two symphonies, chamber music and church music.
