After Koberstein's death, the 5th edition was published by Karl Bartsch (Leipzig 1872–75, five volumes), who also published the 6th edition (1884 ff.).

Koberstein was editor of the anthology Heinrich von Kleist . Letters to his sister (Berlin 1860). He also acted as editor of the third volume of Johann Wilhelm Löbell's work Development of German Poetry (Braunschweig 1865).

As one of the most important German scholars of his time, August Koberstein was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Breslau in 1857 . In 1870 he was accepted as an honorary member of the Göttingen Society of Sciences .

Koberstein got involved in the conservative camp in 1848 and was chairman of the constitutional association in Naumburg. As conference president, he led the people's assembly in Kösen in July 1848 and was the focus of the Kösener bird pastures .
