Aleksander Marczewski

Aleksander Marczewski (born June 21, 1911 in Irządze , † January 10, 1981 in Worchester , Massachusetts ) was a Polish composer , conductor and organist .

Marczewski studied piano at the Conservatory of the Krakow Music Society from 1933 to 1934. At the same time he worked as a theater pianist at the Julius Słowacki Theater and as a répétiteur and choir conductor at the Kraków Opera. At the Warsaw Conservatory , he studied from 1935 to 1937 composition with Stanisław Kazura and Kazimierz Sikorski and conducting with Walerian Bierdiajew . In 1935 he taught at the music school in Kielce, from 1936 to 1939 he worked as an organist, choir director and teacher in Jędrzejów.

After the Second World War, he continued his training with Bierdiajew from 1947 to 1949. In 1952 he directed the Voivodship Symphony Orchestra in Kielce for several months, from 1953 the Workers' Symphony Orchestra he founded, and from 1955 to 1956 also the Radom Town Choir. In 1965 he emigrated to the USA and lived first in Scranton / Pennsylvania, from 1968 in Worchester. He worked as a church organist and choir director, wrote articles for the Polish press and popularized contemporary Polish music.
