- Gaius Claudius Marcellus and Lucius Cornelius Lentulus Crus are consuls of the Roman Empire .
- Marcus Antonius is the tribune of the Roman Republic , together with Lucius Caecilius Metellus , Gaius Cassius Longinus , Quintus Cassius Longinus and Lucius Marcius Philippus .
- Marcus Aemilius Lepidus is praetor . In this capacity he initiates the appointment of Gaius Julius Caesar as dictator that year .
Roman civil war
- January 7th : The Roman Senate rejects Caesar's proposal to dismiss his army and that of Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus at the same time , and instructs Pompey to defend Rome .
- January 10th : “ Alea iacta est ” : Caesar crosses the Rubicon and thus triggers the civil war against Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus .
- April 23 : The Optimates withdraw from Sicily to Africa. Caesar's General Gaius Scribonius Curio lands on the island.
- August: Curio lands in Africa and wins some minor victories there, but is crushed in the Battle of the Bagradas .
