List of tribunes of the Roman Republic
The list of tribunes of the Roman Republic contains all verifiable tribunes ( tribuni plebis ) from 493 BC. Until 43 BC Due to the sources, not all can be given, there are also questionable or not precisely assignable names or dates.
The tribunate arose in the class struggles of the Roman Republic and has existed since 493 BC. The resulting most important task of the tribunes - first there were two, from 457 BC. BC ten - was the protection of the plebeians from the power of the patricians . Thus only members of plebeian families were eligible for office; they were elected by the assembly of plebeians, the concilium plebis . As with all Roman magistrates, continuation (direct repetition), iteration and accumulation (accumulation of offices) were forbidden, even if there were deviations from these rules. Until the middle republic in 287 BC BC the tasks and rights of the tribune of the people were differentiated. Since 82 BC The office was part of the cursus honorum and of the status on the same level as the aedility . With Caesar's assassination and the subsequent rise of Octavian , the list of tribunes of the Roman Republic ends in 43 BC. Chr.

Remarks
- ↑ Regarded as certain by Niccolini and Broughton.
- ↑ Year or name or both not clearly documented.
- ↑ Albin (i) us and Sicinius are certainly passed down in two traditions - after Livius and Dionysios Halicarnassus - all others are mentioned at least once, but are doubtful. Cf. Livius, 2.33.3 and Dion. Hal. 6.89.
- ↑ After Dion. Hal. 8.31.4 Icilius .
- ↑ After Niccolini.
- ↑ After Broughton.
- ↑ Volero has been handed down as a prenomen.
- ↑ Laetorius and Volero proposed that the number of tribunes be increased to five; A college of four was finally approved. See Livius, 2.55.10-58.2.
- ↑ Verginius and Volscius proposed that the number of tribunes be increased to 10, cf. Livy 3.30.5-7.
- ↑ Three tribunes from one gens
- ↑ According to Livius 6.36 f. Licinius Stolo and Sextius Lateranus were eight times tribunes; s. Licini-sextic laws .
- ↑ Both Appuleius and Equitius were elected, but were killed before they took office (stoning by senators).
