Politics and world events
- Beginning of the alliance war in the Roman Empire . In central and southern Italy , numerous Italian peoples rose up to fight against the increasingly unbearable Roman domination, including the Samnites , Martians and Lucanians . In the merciless war waged by both sides, Rome soon found itself forced to make concessions.
- As troop commander, Lucius Sulla subdues Campania and defeats the Samnites. His soldiers give him the most honorable military award for his successes: the "corona graminea" , a laurel wreath wound from grass .
Culture, science and technology
- The doctor Asklepiades of Bithynia comes to Rome and heals with diets, exercise, baths, sweating and water cures.
- The Chinese historian Sima Qian completed Shiji on the Western Han Dynasty , the first example of Chinese historiography .
