- In Asia Minor , on the orders of Mithridates VI. about 80,000 Romans murdered ( Vespers of Ephesus ). This is the occasion for the 1st Mithridatic War . The cause was excessive taxes and tribute payments to the Roman Empire . Because of the severe weakening of the Roman army , the demands are temporarily suspended. This leads to a shortage of money in Rome , and massive hoardings set in , which bring the circulation of money and thus the economy to an almost complete standstill. As a result, there are repeated wars, which are seen as the only possibility for economic recovery.
- Beginning of the Mithridatic War : Mithridates VI, the king of Pontus , unites with the Anatolian pirate states to drive the Romans out of Anatolia.
- Sulla's troops conquer Rome . He officiates as dictator rei publicae constituendae .
- The Egyptian pharaoh Ptolemy X fell while trying to conquer Cyprus . He is succeeded by his older brother Ptolemy IX. , which was also its predecessor.
