Demetrios III.
Demetrios III. (* approx. 115 BC ; † 88 BC ), called Eukairos , Theos , Philopator and Soter , was from 95-88 BC. BC King of the Seleucid Empire . He was a son of Antiochus VIII. Grypus from his first marriage to Tryphaina .
With the help of the Egyptian king Ptolemy IX. he succeeded around 95 BC To restore part of his father's Syrian rule. He held court in Damascus , from where he extended his territory. He defeated the Maccabees king Alexander Jannäus in a battle near Shechem , but the hostility of the Jewish population eventually forced him to retreat. He constantly fought against his cousin Antiochus X and defeated him with the help of his brother Philip I Philadelphus . When he tried to depose his brother, he was defeated by him with the help of the Arabs and the Parthian Eparchen Mithridates Sinnakes , captured and taken prisoner by the Parthian king Mithridates until his death in 88 BC.
