Antiochus VIII. Epiphanes Philometor Kallinikos (* approx. 141 BC; † 96 BC ), called Grypos ( hooked nose ), was a son of Demetrios II and Cleopatra Thea . He was born as a boy in 125 BC. After his mother killed his older brother Seleucus V , and ruled with her. After Antiochus killed the usurper Alexander II. Zabinas in 123 BC. His mother tried to poison him with wine, but the suspicious king forced her to drink the cup herself.

He married in 124 BC The Egyptian princess Tryphaina . 113 BC His half-brother and cousin Antiochus IX returned. Kyzikenus returned from exile and started a civil war. Kyzikenus' wife Cleopatra , a sister of Tryphaina, was probably killed in the temple of Daphne outside Antioch on the orders of Tryphaina, whereupon Kyzikenos Tryphaina 111 BC. Executed out of vengeance. The two brothers then divided Syria among themselves until Grypos 96 BC. Was killed by his minister Herakleon . All of his five sons became his successors.
