Gallic War
- The rebellious Gauls under Vercingetorix suffer a defeat in the Gallic War against the Roman conquering army under Gaius Julius Caesar in the battle for Avaricum . In the conquered city, Caesar gives his soldiers a free hand: They kill 40,000 people.
- In the battle of Gergovia the troops of Caesar suffer a defeat against the Gauls under Vercingetorix .
- Under the pressure of the oncoming Romans, the Parisii (a Celtic tribe) have been burning since the 3rd century BC. Chr. Existing island fort Lutetia Parisiorum on the Seine island Ile de la Cité and leave it to the invaders ( Battle of Lutetia ). The Romans rebuilt Lutetia , fortified it and extended it to the left bank of the Seine. There they build baths and a forum . Lutetia later became known under the name Civitas Parisiorum or Parisia in the Roman Empire, but it did not yet have the importance that the city would eventually achieve under the Franks as Paris .

- January 18 : During fighting on the Via Appia near Bovillae, an armed gang led by Titus Annius Milo murders the popular party politician Publius Clodius Pulcher .
- Marcus Tullius Cicero gives the unsuccessful defense speech for Milo, who then goes into exile in Massilia.
- After the unrest in Rome , the Senate appoints Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus as consul sine collega (without colleagues).
