The triumvir Marcus Aemilius Lepidus and Lucius Munatius Plancus become full consuls of the Roman Empire .
- March: Sextus Pompeius , youngest son of Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus , brings Sicily under his control. The previous governor Pompeius Bithynicus , who hands over Messana on condition that the government is divided, Sextus has after a grace period eliminated. Conquering Sicily gave him the time and resources to raise an army while his fleet from its central position endangered Rome's grain supply. By intercepting the sea transports and raids on the coast, Sextus actually succeeds in causing famine to break out in Rome. Octavian then dispatches Quintus Salvidienus Rufus Salvius with a fleet in the early summer , but Pompey parked it at Scyllaeum in the Strait of Messina and drove it back.
