Roman Suchecki

Roman Suchecki (born March 11, 1933 in Leipzig , † January 10, 2003 in Danzig ) was a Polish cellist and music teacher.

The son of the violinist Marta Suchecka studied at the Bydgoszcz Music School with Zdzisław Wojciechowski and attended the cello class of Kazimierz Wiłkomirski at the Sopot Music School until 1958 . At the Moscow Conservatory he took lessons from Mstislav Rostropovich in 1960 and from Sergiusz Szyryński in 1963 . From 1956 he taught at the State University of Music in Sopot , where he was deputy dean of the instrumental department from 1968 to 1972, head of the department for string instruments and chamber music from 1969 and vice-rector from 1972 to 1975. In 1983 he received a professorship and from 1987 to 1993 he was rector of the music academy. From 1980 to 1987 he was also the rector of the newly established Bydgoszcz State Music Academy.

From 1947 Suchecki was a cellist in the Bysgoszcz Symphony Orchestra, led by Arnold Reszler , and from 1953 he was the concertmaster of the cellists of the Opera and Philharmonic Orchestras of Poland and Gdansk. As a soloist, he performed with practically all of Poland's major symphony orchestras until 1983 and played around 140 premieres of works by Polish and foreign composers. He wrote the monograph Wiolonczela od A do Z , wrote articles for various music magazines and participated as a juror in music competitions.
