Carwyn Rees James (born November 2, 1929 in Cefneithin , Carmarthenshire , Wales , † January 10, 1983 in Amsterdam , Netherlands ) was a Welsh rugby union player who was used as a connector . He led the British and Irish Lions in 1971 as coach to the only straight win against New Zealand .

James was a trained teacher . He played for the Llanelli RFC and was twice for the Welsh national team in 1958 . He was best known as the coach of Llanelli and the Lions. He led Llanelli to four cup wins and in 1972 also to a victory over the All Blacks.

In 1971, he led the British and Irish Lions to two wins, one draw and one loss on their tour to New Zealand. The Lions team at the time is considered to be one of the best of all time and was best known for their attractive offensive style of play, which was shaped by James.

James died in Amsterdam on January 10, 1983.
