Charles Norman Mason

Charles Norman Mason (born January 10, 1955 in Salt Lake City ) is an American composer and music teacher.

Mason studied music at the University of Miami and the University of Illinois . His teachers included Donald Erb , Lukas Foss , Milton Babbitt , Roger Reynolds , Ben Johnston , Salvatore Martirano , John Melby, and Jacob Druckman . He teaches composition and music theory at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama. As managing director of the Living Artist Foundation , he is particularly dedicated to promoting contemporary composers and their music. He served as editor of the Living Music Journal for 15 years and was a co-founder of the Birmingham Art Music Alliance . He was also Vice President of the American Society for Electro-Acoustic Music for six years and is director of the Alabama Music Teachers Association Composition Commissioning Program and founder and director of the Living Artist Recordings record company .

For his compositions Mason u. a. 1995 with the Delius Prize and 2005-06 the Samuel Barber Rome Price Fellowship . At the International Festival for Electroacoustic Music in Bourges in 1989 he was honored with an honorable mention. He received composition commissions a. a. from the American Composers Orchestra , the Miami String Quartet , the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra , the Greg Smith Singers and the Danish Corona Guitar Kvartett, and from musicians such as the violinist Karen Bentley Pollock , the cellists Madelaine Shapiro and Craig Hultgren , the guitarist Paul Bowman , pianist William DeVan, and singers Robert Black and Rick Ferguson . He also worked with video artists Sheri Wills and Alex Schweder and photographer Richard Barnes .
