Geworg Vardanyan

Geworg Andrejewitsch Vardanyan ( Armenian Գեվորգ Անդրեվիչ Վարդանյան , Russian Гево́рк Андре́евич Вартаня́н ; * February 17, 1924 in Rostov-on-Don ; † January 10, 2012 in Moscow ) was a Soviet secret agent of Armenian descent .

Life

Vardanyan came to Tabriz , Iran , in 1930 with his father, who worked for the Soviet secret service . At the age of 16, he also became a secret service agent.

The Soviet agent Nikolai Kuznetsov , who operates in Ukraine, is said to have learned of the Weitsprung company , disguised as Lieutenant Paul Siebert , an allegedly planned attack on the participants in the Tehran conference led by Otto Skorzeny . Vardanyan allegedly participated in the thwarting of this plan. Historians assume that such a plan never existed, but that the Soviet reports about it were part of a disinformation campaign by the NKVD and later the KGB .

In 1955 he graduated from the State V. Bryusov University of Languages ​​and Social Sciences in Yerevan . He worked for the Russian foreign intelligence service SWR until the 1990s . It was not until December 20, 2000 that Vardanyan's name and his role in the events in Tehran were announced.

Vardanyan received numerous Soviet awards. He was married, his wife Goar (1926-2019) was also an agent and worked with him. He died of cancer in 2012 in a Moscow hospital at the age of 87. At his funeral, Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to the widow, and Dmitri Medvedev praised him as a "legendary secret agent".
