Zoltán Pokorni [ ˈzoltaːn ˈpokorni ] (born January 10, 1962 in Budapest ) is a bourgeois politician of the Hungarian party Fidesz - Hungarian Citizens' Association and secondary school teacher in Hungary .

Professional career as a teacher

He completed his studies in Hungarian language / literature and history at the Loránd Eötvös University in 1987. He then became a teacher in a Budapest grammar school.

In 1988 he founded the Association of Young Pedagogues and then the Democratic Union of Young Pedagogues, which he headed until 1993. He took an active part in the negotiations of the National Round Table , and at the same time he was editor-in-chief of the newspaper of the Ráció union. After joining the Fidesz party, he resigned from his other functions.

Political career

Between 1994 and 1998

In 1994 he became a member of parliament, so he gave up his job as a teacher. Between 1994 and 1998 he headed the Education, Science, Youth and Sports Commission. Between 1994 and 1997 he was deputy group leader of Fidesz, between 1997 and 1998 group leader.

Activity during the Orbán government

During Viktor Orbán's reign from 1998 to 2001, he was Minister of Education. He accomplished an integration of universities, abolished the tuition fees, and introduced a bank credit system to finance the studies.

In 2001 he became party chairman after László Kövér , which is why he resigned as minister.

Between 2001 and 2002 he was the club's deputy chairman.

In 2002, after the election defeat, he retained his position as party chairman and became chairman of the parliamentary group. He also became deputy head of the Parliamentary Commission for Education and Science.

Resignation and return

In July 2002, he learned that his father had been shadowing the former People's Republic of Hungary on behalf of the Ministry of Interior's Office for National Security , so he decided to resign. He became vice-chairman again. He retired for a year, and in May 2003 he became vice chairman of the newly organized Fidesz.
