Ice whispers
Ice whispering is the title of a 2006 novel by the Austrian writer Bettina Balàka .
The novel is set in Vienna during the First World War . Balthasar Beck was a police commissioner before the war. During the war he was taken prisoner by the Russians. After being imprisoned in a Russian camp, he returned to Vienna. In Vienna he tries to find his way back to his old life. When he comes back to work as a commissioner, he has to deal with unusual murder cases that seem to be linked to his experience in Siberia

In the novel, “ice whispering” is a noise that occurs when you breathe out at around minus 42 degrees Celsius . The moisture contained in the air we breathe immediately freezes into tiny crystals in the extreme cold . These cause this very peculiar sound.
