Samir Khalil Samir SJ ( Arabic سمير خليل سمير Samir Chalil Samir , born January 10, 1938 in Cairo ) is an Egyptian Islamic scholar , Semitist , Orientalist and Catholic theologian .

Life

Samir entered the Jesuit order in Aix-en-Provence in 1955 and began studying philosophy, theology and Islamic studies. He did his doctorate on a topic on Oriental Catholic theology and on a topic in Islamic studies. He worked in Birmingham, England, and in the Netherlands. He then founded 20 teaching institutes for literacy in Egypt and then taught for 12 years at the Pontifical Orient Institute in Rome. In 1986 he moved to Lebanon during the civil war , where he taught theology and Islamic studies at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) . At the same time, he founded the research and documentation center CEDRAC in Beirut , which collects literature on Christian heritage in the Middle East. He is also a professor at the Pontifical Oriental Institute , Rome, at the Center Sèvres de Théologie (part of the Institut Catholique ), Paris, as well as at the Maqasid Institute , Beirut, where - unique in the world - he is apprentice imams on Christianity and at the Institut supérieur des sciences religieuses (ISSR) of the USJ taught Muslim topics. He was visiting professor at the Universities of Graz , Tokyo , al-Azhar University and Georgetown University , at the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding , Washington, DC

On June 22, 2009 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. Appointed Consultor for the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops.

Until the appointment of the new Rector David Nazar SJ, Samir Khalil Samir was Pro-Rector of the Pontifical Oriental Institute (PIO) ("Orientale") in Rome from April to August 2015 .

Act

Samir is the author of 40 books and over 500 articles. He is an advisor to numerous church representatives and politicians in Europe and the Middle East. He also discussed everyday life with Muslim youth in the Parisian banlieues long before the unrest in 2005 .

His main areas of work are: the Christian Orient, Islam and the integration of Muslims in Europe as well as the relations between Christians and Muslims. In July 2006 (during the Lebanon War ) he drafted a peace plan for the Middle East.
