David Nazar

David E. Nazar SJ (born November 11, 1952 in Toronto , Canada ) is a Roman Catholic theologian . Since 2015 he has been rector of the " Orientale " in Rome.

Life

David Nazar comes from a Ukrainian family of the Byzantine Rite . He joined the religious community of Jesuits on September 2, 1973 . On June 3, 1983, he was ordained a priest by Isidore Borecky , Bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Toronto . With the permission of the Jesuit Superior General, Nazar has been holding masses in both Latin and Byzantine rites since 1983.

He completed a degree in philosophy at Gonzaga University (Bachelor of Arts, 1977; Master of Arts, 1980) and the Saint Michael's Academy (Licentiate Philosophy Ph. L., 1980). He studied theology at Regis College in Toronto (Bachelor in Sacred Theology STB, 1983; Licentiate in Sacred Theology STL, 1984) and at the University of Toronto (Master of Divinity in Theology, 1983; Master of Theology 1984). At Saint Paul University in Ottawa , he completed a doctorate in theology (Doctorate of Theology Th.D. 1989) and a doctorate in philosophy (Doctorate of Philosophy Ph.D. 1989).

David Nazar had various roles in his order, including as a prison chaplain and for working with the Indigenous Peoples of Canada. From 1996 to 2002 he was provincial superior in Toronto. In 2003, the Superior General of the Societas Jesu, Peter Hans Kolvenbach, appointed Superior and Regional Superior of his order in Ukraine .

On August 26, 2015, Pope Francis appointed David Nazar as the new Rector of the Pontifical Oriental Institute (PIO) ("Orientale") in Rome . He succeeds the previous Pro-Rector Samir Khalil Samir SJ.

Nazar speaks English, French, Ukrainian, Italian. He masters sign language as well as Ojibwe , a language of the indigenous Anishinabe .
