Lothar Arnold (born January 10, 1959 in Ettlingen ) is a German musician and chess player .

After his time as a student at the Baden Conservatory in Karlsruhe , he studied from 1979 to 1987 at the Karlsruhe University of Music . He graduated in piano with an artistic degree in piano chamber music , and also studied theory / composition with Eugen Werner Velte, among others .

He has performed with the Karlsruhe Chamber Trio , cello recitals with Mettilt Kassassoglou and with the double bass player Georg Noeldeke. From 1988 to 1993 he had a teaching position at the Institute for Musicology in Karlsruhe for the subjects of form theory , counterpoint and harmony .

His compositions and improvisations were used for the award-winning animation film Der Stand der Dinge (2001, directed by Rüdiger Staub and Samuel Gann), which was made in the style of a classic silent film , and the surrealist short film GNOSIS (2003, directed by Rüdiger Staub, Oliver Haun and Samuel Gann). Lothar Arnold composes for piano and accordion as well as for chamber music in various formations. The scores were published by JMK-Verlag, Marxzell , Augemus Musikverlag, Bochum , Schott-Verlag , Mainz, and Edition Slato, Trossingen . The accordion compositions were commissions from the German Association of Chord Teachers for Accordion Chamber Music in a rare cast.

He learned the rules of chess from his father. In the A-squad of the German Chess Youth he was trained by the then national coach Sergiu Samarian .

As a teenager, Lothar Arnold took part in a so-called Cadet World Championship (U17) in Wattignies, France in 1976 and, in 1978/79, at the European Junior Championship (U20) in Groningen , where he was 17th of 28 participants . In 1978 he was in the German youth championship in Dillingen behind Eric Lobron second after a playoff. After the 9 rounds played, both had the same number of points of 7. In 1979 he was Badischer individual champion in Schonach , after he had previously won several Baden youth championships.

Arnold holds the title of International Master of FIDE . He had already collected the required standards in October 1998, but the title could not be awarded to him until 2000, as his 1998 Elo rating was still below 2400. In international matches he plays for the Baden Chess Association . From this he received the silver badge of honor in 2005 as a player from Baden with the most appearances in chess fights (then more than 75, now over 90 appearances).

His first club was SC Pforzheim . From there he moved to the Karlsruhe Chess Friends , then to SK Zähringen in 1921 , then back to the Karlsruhe Chess Friends, to the Eppingen Chess Club and back to the Karlsruhe Chess Friends. In the German Federal Chess League, Lothar Arnold played in the 1985/86 season for SK Zähringen in 1921, in the 1986/87 season for the Karlsruhe chess friends and in the 1996/97 season for the Eppingen chess club . In the Austrian league he played from 2001 to the 2003/04 season for SG Alpine Raika Trofaiach Niklasdorf , in 2001 in France for Bischwiller . From 1999 to 2003 he played in the Swiss Bundesliga for BVB Basel .

Correspondence chess

In correspondence chess , he received the title of Honored International Master (SIM) from the International Correspondence Chess Federation in 2006 . His Elo rating in correspondence chess is 2497 in the 3/2009 Elo list. It was last above 2500 in 2001.
