Jacob Jacobsen Dampe (born January 10, 1790 in Copenhagen , † December 22, 1867 there ) was a Danish theologian and philosopher .

Life

Dampe was born the son of a tailor. He became a theologian, began teaching and received his doctorate in 1812. phil. about the ethics of the Koran. He married Dorothea Kirstine Boye. For some time he worked as a newspaper editor. In 1816 he moved to Copenhagen and founded a school for wealthy families, which closed four years later. In Copenhagen his attention was drawn to satirical articles in various magazines, sermons about the conformity of freedom with the spirit of Christianity and membership in a reading club Cliofor men with "liberal views". During the so-called “Jewish feud” in 1819, his statements were taken as approval of the unrest and he was banned from the pulpit. As an academic he used his authority to give lectures. These were placed under censorship. It was forbidden to continue these lectures. It was feared that it would undermine "respect for religion". After the divorce in 1819 he got into financial difficulties and was expelled from the Clio Club because he could not afford the membership fees. In November 1820 he began to work out a plan for a "popular" constitution with the aim of abolishing absolutism . He invited like-minded people to do so and was supported by friends and a laid-off captain Carl Top. He was arrested at the first meeting. This was followed by a charge of high treason (rebellion against Frederik VI ), which was followed by a death sentence, which was later changed to life imprisonment.

Dampe spent the years 1820 to 1826 in fortress custody on the pea island Christiansø and the period from 1826 to 1841 in the prison built for him on Frederiksø , where his cell can be viewed.
