Neville Bowles Chamberlain
Sir Neville Bowles Chamberlain (born January 10, 1820 in Rio de Janeiro , † February 3, 1902 in Lordswood, Southampton ) was a British field marshal .
Second of five sons of the English consul general Henry Chamberlain in Rio de Janeiro. Chamberlain joined the Indian Army in 1836 , served as a subaltern officer in the First Anglo-Afghan War , where he was wounded six times. Chamberlain was transferred to the Life Guard of the Governor General of British India in 1842 and one of the deputy quartermaster general in 1843 . In 1843 he took part in the Gwalior Campaign and the Battle of Maharajpore . He then fought in the First Sikh War and Second Sikh War . In 1848 he became adjutant to James Broun-Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie and commanded an irregular cavalry regiment in the Punjab .
Shortly after the outbreak of the Sepoy uprising , a flying column was set up under Chamberlain to take action against the insurgent troops everywhere. Later, during the uprising, Chamberlain, meanwhile promoted to colonel , served as adjutant general of the Bengali army and was seriously wounded on July 18, 1855 when he left Delhi . He then distinguished himself in the fighting against the hill tribes, became lieutenant general in 1872 , member of the government council of Madras in 1875, and in the same year received command of the army of Madras. In 1878 he was appointed head of the British embassy to Kabul , which was forced to repent on September 21 by an officer of the emir Shir Ali .
In 1863 he was ennobled as Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath , in 1866 he was accepted as Knight Commander in the Order of the Star of India , in 1873 Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India and in 1875 Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath raised.
