Mobile column

Mobile or flying columns were smaller troop divisions that were mixed from all branches of arms as required and were intended for the so-called Little War , i.e. today's guerrilla fight .

Mobile columns were independent in their ventures and not tied to a specific line of retreat , so that they could move with great freedom.

In particular, one understood under mobile column those departments that had to roam an area of insurgents in order to u. a. contribute to disarmament, provide food and fines, and disperse armed gangs.

Larger mobile columns were called the Flying Corps .

Mobile or flying columns were used by the British a. a. used in the suppression of the Sepoy uprising in 1857 and the Mahdi uprising in 1897.
