Horst Astroth (born October 30, 1923 in Naumburg (Saale) ; † January 10, 2017 there ) was a German walker .

Career

Astroth grew up in Naumburg right in the city center on Reußenplatz and became a member of the Naumburg men's gymnastics club at an early age. After he was drafted as a soldier in the Second World War , he interrupted his sports career. Astroth returned from the war wounded, which is why he did not immediately return to sport. It wasn't until 1953, when he was almost 30 years old, that he found walking. Together with his sports friends Max Weber and Dieter Lindner , he founded walking sports in Naumburg. At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome , he crossed the 50 km distance after 4 hours and 50 minutes in 16th place. Two years later at the European Athletics Championships in Belgrade in 1962 , he reached eighth place. He had previously occupied this place at the 42nd walking championships in Great Britain in May 1961.

In the 1970s he became a junior trainer at BSG Aufbau Naumburg . In the following years he established the international walking competitions in Naumburg, which are still held today as walking days.

Astroth got involved with the Liberals at an early age. He was also a freelancer for the Liberal Democratic Newspaper (LDZ). After German reunification, he became a member of the FDP and was a member of the city council for many years. Astroth died in January 2017 in his home town of Naumburg at the age of 93. He was married to his wife Gisela and lived with her until the end in a retirement home. Astroth was still active in sports until shortly before his death and still holds state records in Saxony-Anhalt in the older age groups.
