Sebastian Schobinger (also Sebastian Schowinger ; born April 10, 1579 in St. Gallen ; † January 10, 1652 ibid) was a mayor of St. Gallen ( Switzerland ).

Life

Sebastian Schobinger was the son of Tobias Schobinger (* April 26, 1539 in St. Gallen; † May 21, 1619 ibid), landowner and mathematician, and his wife Magdalena Kobler (* 1556 in St. Gallen; † July 6, 1640 ibid.) ). The names of his siblings are known:

  • Esaias Schobinger (* 1572 in St. Gallen; † October 24, 1636 ibid), trained for three years in Milan and Turin , then worked for the Schobinger trading company in Vienna for seven years , married to Sabina von Vonbühl

His grandfather was Bartholomäus Schobinger (1500–1585), a wealthy businessman, private scholar and owner of Schloss Horn and Schloss Weinstein in Marbach .

From November 12, 1599, he studied languages, philosophy and medicine in Padua , as well as at the University of Basel , and was awarded a doctorate in 1601. med. after receiving his doctorate , he went on a long trip to Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) and Frankfurt am Main .

In 1604 he became the personal physician of the later Emperor Matthias . From 1605 to 1608 and from 1611 to 1634 he was the princely abbey doctor and personal physician of the prince abbots Bernhard Müller and Pius Reher from St. Gallen. At that time he was considered the most important doctor in eastern Switzerland and also looked after the monasteries Magdenau , St. Johann , Pfäfers , Einsiedeln and Muri as well as the cities of Bregenz , Feldkirch and Constance . The abbot Jodocus Hösli of the Pfäfers monastery requested an expert opinion on the relocation of the bathing facilities of the monastery, which were located in a rocky gorge that was difficult to access; through his mediation an investigation of the healing spring in the Tamina gorge was carried out.

From 1614 to 1632 he was councilor and from 1632 to 1652 alternating with Georg Huber , Kaspar Friedrich (elected 1636) and Hans Hildbrand (elected 1638) every three years as mayor , former mayor and imperial bailiff . He represented St. Gallen on the federal diets , especially in the years 1618 to 1629 . In 1619 he traveled to Heidelberg as ambassador to receive the regalia from Elector Friedrich V, then imperial vicar , which had not been confirmed under two previous emperors.

In 1650, as envoy of the city of St. Gallen, he took part in the arbitration of the four umbrella locations on feudal and customs disputes with the abbey of St. Gallen .

He conducted extensive correspondence with scholars of his time, including Johann Rudolf Saltzmann (1573–1656), Felix Platter , Thomas Platter , Josua Pictorius , Melchior Goldast , Theodor Zwinger the Younger , Wilhelm Fabry and Johann Heinrich Hottinger . As a librarian, he also managed the Vadiana , the library of the scholar Joachim Vadian , with whom he was friends. It also contains his collection of 701 letters, but no letters from him.

On March 13, 1623, he and his eight brothers and all descendants of his grandfather Bartholomew were raised to the imperial nobility by Ferdinand II .

Sebastian Schobinger was married to Sabina (1579–1612), daughter of Joachim Zollikofer and widow of Matthäus Zollikofer , since 1612 .
