Martyrion for Carpus and Papylus

Karpus, Papylus and Agathonike are three Christian martyrs , although it is unclear whether they were persecuted under Marcus Aurelius (161-180) or under Decius (249-251).

background

In Pergamon , the bishop Karpus, who came from Thyatira or Gordos , and the deacon Papylus were interrogated by the governor. Karpus was tortured by hanging him up and tearing his skin with claws. As long as he could still speak, he steadfastly declared that he was a Christian . The same thing happened after Papylus; both were sentenced to death by fire and nailed to a stake. Agathonike, Papylus' sister, witnessed the execution and voluntarily allowed herself to be nailed to the stake and burned.
