Karl August Zehden (born August 16, 1843 in Linz , † May 22, 1901 in Mödling ; also Carl Zehden ) was an Austrian geographer .

Life

Karl Zehden was the son of a middle school teacher. He attended high school in his native Linz. He then studied history, geography, philosophy and economics at the University of Vienna , which he completed in 1869 as a doctor of philosophy.

Zehden initially worked under Alexander Gigl in the archive of the Ministry of the Interior in Vienna from 1869 until he succeeded Vincenz Klun as a teacher of geography and statistics at the Vienna Commercial Academy in 1871 . He held this post for thirty years until his death. Zehden married Maria Müller from the Rhineland in 1876 , who came from a Walloon family. He traveled through Europe, the Orient and North America . In 1882 he became a committee member of the Imperial and Royal Geographical Society and professor of transport geography and statistics at the advanced training school for railway officials in Vienna. He worked for the Ministry of Education from 1884 as a member of the examination commission for commercial subjects and from 1888 as an inspector of commercial schools with German and Italian language of instruction in Austria. In the last ten years of his life until his death in 1901, he worked on reforming the Austrian commercial academies and commercial schools.

Karl Zehden is considered to be the founder of trade and transport geography in Austria. His standard work, Handelsgeographie, based on the latest research , has appeared in numerous editions since 1871 and has been translated into several languages. In other publications, too, he endeavored to present the practical effects of economic geographic knowledge.
