action

Lila's wedding at her childhood home in Long Beach is the reason for the old college clique to reunite. Tripler and her husband Pete as well as the engaged couple Jake and Weesie have already arrived, only Laura travels alone. She tries to blame her nervousness on the upcoming speech as maid of honor for her best friend Lila's, but Tripler seems to know the real reason. During the wedding rehearsal in the afternoon, Laura's tenseness intensifies, in particular she tries to avoid eye contact and more personal conversations with the groom Tom.

The bachelorette party is not only a traditional big family dinner with many, often inappropriate table speeches, but also a boozy reunion party for the clique that used to be called "The Romantics". Only Lila wants to spend the wedding eve without a groom so as not to conjure up any misfortune. She ignores small signs that her groom might have deeper feelings for Laura, his ex from college.

Tom, on the other hand, wants to celebrate his bachelorette party and is having fun with his old friends on the nearby beach. After more or less comparing their previous dreams with their current life situations, Tom encourages everyone to swim and shortly afterwards disappears without a trace. For the search they split up into pairs, Laura is accompanied by Lila's younger brother Chip, but soon he is too drunk to be able to walk upright.

While the other four search the house and guest house for Tom in vain, Laura finds the missing groom on the beach. Tom is now trying to finally explain why he suddenly left Laura years ago and without any explanation, even though he harbored such deep, inspiring love for her. Although she is deeply disappointed and hurt, Laura can no longer suppress her true feelings and lets herself into him again.

The next morning she is plagued with guilt that she finally confesses the truth about the affair with Tom to her best friend. Lila, on the other hand, is absolutely determined that nothing and no one can prevent her marriage, so she regards the confession as a pipe dream of a jealous rejected woman. Now the decision is entirely up to Tom whether the wedding will take place or not.

criticism

The Romantics is to be criticized because of the dubious events. Because of this strange friendship constellation, it is difficult for a viewer to come along here. However, great actors save this drama to a solid level. "

- Thomas Ays on moviesection.de

" The Romantics convinces with crisp, fresh dialogues, good actors and an unusual finale, but it suffers a little from the lame dramaturgy."

- Dirk Hoffmann on zelluloid.de

“... in a novel, of course, completely different means (are) available and Niederhoffer may have mastered them, but as a director she lacks the necessary intuition to introduce and build up her characters. Her wives are quacky, bitchy, complex-compensating, her men are silty, immature and as bored as they are boring. There would be enough superficialities that Niederhoffer could break up and examine in the course of the plot, but not only does she lack the time to deal with three couples and eight individuals (including Lila's bad brother), she also simply lacks the necessary Timing, a feeling for the right moment to approach the characters accordingly.
