John Logue is an avid campaigner for John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election and an equally staunch Democrat . When he swore while drunk at an election rally that he would travel to Canada in the event of George W. Bush's re-election , he wanted to keep this promise after Kerry's defeat. Together with the mysterious Chloe, who has applied to be a passenger, he sets off on a trip to Winnipeg . In the course of the journey, the two get closer and get to know each other's background for the journey and their true story. So it turns out that John's brother fell in Iraq , while Chloe should actually go back there again, since she is a soldier and therefore fled to Canada.

When the two finally have to realize that neither the marriage with Canadian citizens, which is necessary for a quick naturalization in Canada, nor a life in the hinterland as an illegal political refugee are very tempting in the long run and that it is better to face your responsibilities and challenges, both return to the USA . The final scene reveals that Chloe gets away with a dishonorable dismissal and that she and John are now a couple.
