action
Elderly, divorced New Yorker Harvey Shine makes a living composing advertising jingles after a career as a jazz pianist failed. Devoted to alcohol and close to unemployment, he travels to London , where his daughter Susan celebrates her wedding. There, the not welcome Harvey is accommodated separately from the other guests in a hotel, attends a dinner in a completely unsuitable jacket on the eve of the wedding and learns that Susan's stepfather Brian will lead her to the altar.
Harvey plans to travel back to New York to save his job. In the airport café, however, he made the acquaintance of the younger airport employee, Kate. Although Harvey was still rude when he arrived in London, the two develop sympathy for each other. Life hasn't been easy for Kate either. She is single , takes care of her mother Maggie, has been unsuccessfully on a blind date and attends a writing workshop. Harvey then decides to stay in the British capital until the wedding celebrations and spend the time with Kate, which he also introduces to his family.
After the wedding celebration, they both roam the city until dawn and get to know each other better. Harvey tells Kate about his failed marriage while she tells him about a previous abortion. They both exchange a first kiss at Somerset House . Harvey arranges to meet Kate there for lunch. But he missed the planned meeting because of a weakness caused by his congenital heart rhythm disorder . Kate withdraws, disappointed. Harvey, who has turned down the offer to get back to his old job, follows her to the writing workshop with the help of Kate's work colleagues. Despite the different life situations, he suggests a future together. Kate initially hesitates, fearful of being disappointed again, but then accepts the offer.
Trivia
During their excursions through London, the main characters watch the performance of what appears to be a student live band on the street, which turns out to be the sibling trio Kitty, Daisy and Lewis Durham in a cameo.

criticism
“The love story puts a lot of emphasis on the male main character and their dramatic conflicts, while the woman's background is dealt with in a more comedic manner. If you overlook the numerous plot clichés, the sensitive and tender play of the two main actors is impressive. "
Awards
Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman were nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical at the 2009 Golden Globe Awards , but they were left behind Sally Hawkins ( Happy-Go-Lucky ) and Colin Farrell ( Bruges ... and die? ) .
