action
Helen is the first friend Jackson introduces his mother Martha to when the two of them come to visit her horse breeding farm in Kilronan over Christmas. Back in New York , Helen finds out that she is pregnant. Jackson and Helen marry soon after on Kilronan , where Helen meets Jackson's grandmother Alice, who warns her about Martha. A little later, Helen is attacked by a burglar in her New York apartment and injured with a knife. He steals her necklace with the locket containing a photo of her deceased parents and disappears. As Helen no longer feels safe in New York and Martha complains that she is no longer able to run Kilronan on her own, Helen Jackson suggests moving in with Martha for a while. At the same time, Jackson could whip the farm up in order to increase its value for later sale. Jackson is uncomfortable with the thought of returning to his homeland, as he associates the property with a terrible childhood experience: when he was young, Jackson's father is said to have had an affair with a certain Robin Heyes, which is why his parents argued violently one day. Jackson is said to have tried to protect his mother and accidentally pushed his father down the basement stairs, whereupon he died. Nevertheless, Jackson lets himself into the move.
At first, living together on the farm went well. However, Helen soon notices that Martha is becoming increasingly jealous of her relationship with Jackson. Martha tries to drive a wedge between the two. When Martha forbids Helen to meet Alice, the first major conflict arises between the two women. After an argument with Jackson, Helen visits Alice to learn more about Martha. In the process, she uncovered a terrible secret: The story of the death of her father-in-law, as Martha always sells Jackson, cannot be true. Since she feels more and more threatened by Martha, Helen persuades Jackson to return to New York. He then tells Martha that the farm is ready for sale and that he wants to leave with Helen. Martha is not enthusiastic about this, but gives her son insight. Before that, however, she sends Jackson away to a horse race for the weekend.
When Jackson leaves, Martha bakes a cake for Helen that contains an induction substance. The next day, Helen discovers a newly prepared children's room in the barn house, which makes it obvious that Martha does not intend to leave her grandson Helen. Helen searches a dresser and finds the locket stolen from her in New York. Terrified, she tries to flee, but is successfully stopped by Martha and brought back into the house. Meanwhile, Helen has already gone into labor and she has to give birth in Martha's presence. When Jackson calls during the birth, Martha pretends that everything is okay. However, he is still worried and makes his way home. Meanwhile, Helen gives birth to a boy whom Martha claims immediately and who no longer cares for Helen. She tries to kill her with morphine shortly afterwards, but the plan fails when Jackson returns. When she tries again later, Jackson stands in her way again, without suspecting his mother.
The next morning Helen drops the bomb at breakfast and tells Jackson about the lies his mother told him all his life. Robin Heyes was a male groom with whom Martha had a relationship, making Jackson's father the one who was betrayed. Furthermore, the circumstances of his death did not indicate that Jackson could have been the perpetrator and Helen presented him with the possible instrument. When Martha protests, Helen shows Jackson the injuries she inflicted on her while trying to kill her. Jackson is appalled and explains to Martha that he never wants to see her again after the Kilronan is sold . Martha, meanwhile, still insists that Helen makes it all up out of jealousy. Then Helen knocks them down and leaves the house with Jackson and the baby.
At the end of the film, Helen, Jackson, and the baby visit Alice at their nursing home.
Reviews
- Ruthe Stein in the San Francisco Chronicle : Gwyneth Paltrow appears too innocent to be believable. Johnathon Schaech seems rigid.
- Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times : The most interesting is Jessica Lange's game . It is inconsistent with some aspects of Martha Baring's character, but consistency is not the strong point of the film.
Awards
- Nomination for the Golden Raspberry for Jessica Lange for worst actress 1999.
