action

Thérèse Raquin, a half-orphan, was given to her aunt in the provinces by her father as a child. The aunt has a sickly son named Camille, who is about the same age as Thérèse. They both sleep in the same bed from an early age. As a growing young woman, Thérèse longs for love and passion. One day the aunt tells them that they are going to get married and that Thérèse is supposed to be Camille's protective angel. Marriage is doomed from the start because both are too different in character and outlook on life. Where Thérèse would like to disappear from the petty-bourgeois world of the provinces, Camille cannot imagine anything else. Thérèse wants more from life, strives for freedom that was not granted to any woman in society at the time. Camille finds a job as a clerk in Paris through contacts and the rest of the family accompanies him. Thérèse and her mother-in-law or former foster mother run a small shop for haberdashery in a dirty and narrow side street, where customers rarely get lost.

Life is strictly regulated. The mother is in charge of the house and business. Thérèse must obey and serve in the household. Thursdays are always the domino game evenings, when a small group meets in the Raquin house. On one of these occasions, Camille brings a colleague and former acquaintance from the province with her. He is a painter and portrays Camille. Thérèse quickly begins to develop a passion for the young man named Laurent, which he reciprocates. They start a relationship with each other. He comes to visit her secretly in the afternoon at the Raquins' house. One evening Thérèse runs to Laurent and tells him that she can no longer stand it at home and that she cannot live without him. He then comes up with the idea of eliminating Camille. One afternoon, after the three of them take a walk, the deed is done. The three of them board a rowing boat and Laurent squeezes Camille's windpipe so that he suffocates. This is only shown in individual sequences, as memories of Thérèse and Laurent. Almost a year of mourning goes by. Thérèse has to comfort her mother over and over again about the loss of her son and heartbreaking scenes arise in which the mother accuses Thérèse of not having taken care of her boy enough.

Thérèse and Laurent get married, but are plagued by nightmares, feelings of guilt and attributions. The mother has a stroke and can no longer speak afterwards. Thérèse and Laurent take care of her together, but are diverging more and more. Thérèse goes to absinthe bars more and more often and meets other men there. She is tired of Laurent and their mutual happiness breaks. They are more and more afraid that what they did will be exposed. Out of inattention, they talked and argued about everything in front of the sick mother. The mother is the only one who knows the truth and tries to write it down on the table when the dominoes meet again, but she lacks the strength. The second time she manages to pick up the ink from a dropped inkwell with her walking stick and scribble it on the floor. Laurent and Thérèse get scared because Susan, a mutual friend, saw it. Laurent buys hydrogen cyanide and fills it into a bottle of wine he has brought with him during a picnic with Thérèse and her mother. Thérèse and Laurent drink the poisoned wine in front of their mother and die before the others of the company, which Susan has already alerted, arrive at the scene of the accident.
