“In the 19th Century, persons suffering from mental illness were thought to be alienated from their own true natures. Experts who studied them were therefore known as alienists. "

“In the 19th century it was thought that those who were insane were alienated from their real souls. The experts who examined them were therefore called psychiatrists at the time. "

In New York in 1896, young male prostitutes who offered themselves up as young girls to men fell victim to a gruesome series of murders. The newly appointed police chief Theodore Roosevelt wants to clean up the corruption within his authority and secretly entrusts the psychologist Dr. Laszlo Kreizler and the newspaper illustrator John Moore with the investigation. They are supported by Sara Howard, Roosevelt's secretary and first female employee of the New York City Police Department , and the twins and detectives Marcus and Lucius Isaacson, whose Jewish beliefs are often a problem for them in the investigation.

Chief Byrnes and his assistant Captain Connor are not necessarily on the "right" side of the law, nor are they familiar with the new, psychological investigative methods of Dr. Kreizlers agree, torpedo them and go their own way, often obscuring or twisting facts and steering them in the wrong directions. The first suspect is the son of the wealthy and influential van Bergen family. The police know from him that he is not only spoiled, but also eccentric and sexually perverted. However, the respected family is under police protection and is covered by Byrnes. After more boys' bodies appear, however, Roosevelt decides to find Van Bergen and arrest him.

Captain Conner prevents this, however, by directing the operation, in which Roosevelt is personally present, to a wrong address. Roosevelt is extremely upset about this and demotes Connor in front of the house and in front of all the police officers. After this disgrace, Connor goes on the hunt for van Bergen, whose parents want to protect him from police access and want to send him to Argentina, finds him and chases him to the top of a bridge construction site. Van Bergen doesn't get any further, argues with Connor, insults him, whereupon he is shot and falls into the river. Since his body is never found, everyone assumes that van Bergen left the United States for Argentina.

However, the murders do not stop and it is clear to everyone that van Bergen could not have been the culprit, which Dr. Kreizler had already suspected that the offender's psychological profile had to be different. The joint deliberations of the group around Dr. Kreizler go in the direction of the war trauma of a former soldier. You follow several leads that lead you through various psychological clinics and hospitals. At St. Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, DC , Dr. Kreizler and Moore track down a man named John Beecham. Sara follows his trail in his hometown in New York State and Kreizler / Moore drive to his brother Adam Dury in Boston . During questioning Durys, it is revealed that his brother changed his name due to trauma caused by the massacre of his parents, taking the last name of the tormentor (Beecham). He changed his first name from "George" to "John".

Connor had a professional killer (called "The Swede") on Kreizler in order to prevent him from solving the murders and thereby expose the police to ridicule. “The Swede” ambushes the two of them, but only injures Kreizler. Back in New York, they track Beecham through the census bureau he had worked for a few years earlier. When they find him in a water tank, he first knocks Moore and later Kreizler down because he kidnapped Joseph, one of the rascals, for his next crime. When Kreizler comes to, Beecham wants him to watch what he did, but is shot from behind by Connor, who has been chasing Moore and the doctor. Connor, who now wants to book the position and death of the "monster" for himself and the police, tries to shoot Kreizler, but is disturbed by Sara and turns to her. When he chokes her, she shoots him with a "lady revolver".

Roosevelt thanks Moore and Sara for solving the case, but has to pay tribute to Connor in a public honor in order to protect the face and reputation of the police and those of the bereaved Connors. Byrnes grins smugly. Kreizler and the Isaacsons autopsy Beecham's brain, but cannot find any abnormal changes. Kreizler is disappointed and interprets the investigation as a complete failure for his psychological research based on this case.

reception

The Alienist received mixed reviews in its opening season. Rotten Tomatoes attributes 63% positive reviews to the series (as of March 26, 2018). Newsday's Verne Gay , for example, wrote: “What seems to have come to life on the book pages has a hard time sparking on the screen - admittedly, it is also not easy to step through the haze and shadows that cover it threaten to devour. "

Bjarne Bock from the industry portal Serienjunkies.de wrote in his assessment of the pilot episode: “All in all, in the case of The Alienist, the questionable and yet widespread maxim Style over substance appears to be. The series is impeccable, if not outstanding, in terms of its staging and acting. ”The biggest weakness, however, is the script, which does not come with an exciting plot, good character drawings or successful dialogues.

The series was nominated for the Saturn Award for best action / thriller series and Dakota Fanning for best TV supporting actress in 2018 . Also for the Golden Globes in 2019 was The Alienist in the category "Best Miniseries or TV Movie" and Daniel Bruhl as "Best Actor, Miniseries or TV movie" nominated.
