action

Doug drives to Scotland with his wife Abi and their three children Jess, Lottie and Mickey for the birthday party of Doug's father Gordie, who has cancer. To keep the stress away from him, Doug and Abi want to conceal from him that they are about to divorce and Abi has already moved out of the house with the children. They encourage their children to act as a good family for their relatives. But Grandpa Gordie quickly realizes that something is wrong in the family. Lottie soon tells him what's going on, and Gordie is there to support the girl. He listens to her worries and comforts her.

Some time later, the children go on a trip to the beach with their grandpa. There Gordie explains that he would love to have an old Viking funeral and would like to go out to sea in a burning boat. That way there would be no arguments at his funeral and he would just move on peacefully.

A little later Gordie actually dies on the beach. Lottie runs home to notify the adults, but only sees them arguing over and over again. Instead of informing the adults, she goes back to the beach and tells Mickey and Jess about the argument.

The children decide together to offer their grandfather the funeral he has wished for. They put it on a wooden raft, pour petrol over it, set it on fire and let it drift out to sea. They say goodbye to their grandfather on the beach.

When the children tell their parents about their experiences, they are horrified. The police are investigating the case while the youth welfare office takes care of the children. The youth welfare office soon realizes that parents are doing their best to look after their children as much as possible. The investigation is closed and everyone says goodbye on Gordie Beach. Abi and Doug now want to try to settle their disputes out of court and to show consideration for each other.

Reviews

"Plenty of black British humor mixes in 'A Scotsman doesn't make a summer' with jokes for domestic use, the simple unbelievable and the grandiose unpackable flow into one another, first it is laconic, leisurely and benign, then it becomes rapid, biting and pointed . "

- Berliner Zeitung (daily newspaper)

“With their original tragic comedy, the British comedy directors Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin have succeeded in creating a varied story about life that neither swings the moral club nor shuns unpleasant topics. Great actors, an entertaining staging and realistic characters put a big exclamation mark behind the diversity of the European cinema market! "
